Snow running is a pastime that originated long ago on the shores of Scandinavia and it’s something that’s making a big comeback today! It involves running through the snow, with races over longer distances requiring the use of crampons to help with traction.
Over the last 6 years, Baqueira Beret has held the annual Beret Montgarri Race, which we’re proud to say has now been included as part of the snow-running Spanish Cup. This open race is hugely competitive, with runners attracted to take part from all over the world. Perhaps one of this year’s competitors could be you!
Held at an altitude of 1,860 metres, the path the Beret Montgarri Race takes is perhaps best characterised by its intensely beautiful landscape, with competitors passing through mountain trails and lush forests. Entrants also get to enjoy the stunning locale of Montgarri, which is widely known as one of the most spectacularly picturesque locations in the Pyrenees. And with international flights arriving daily, there’s no reason you shouldn’t try it out for yourself!
This Year’s Race
The 2020 edition of this year’s race – being held in January 19th – can be enjoyed over three different distances, with each suiting a different type of competitor. Beginners are perhaps best off trying the 6k trail, with the middle-distanced 12k choice for those with a bit of experience. Lastly, for those looking for a real challenge, the 17k trail offers a test of your physical prowess!
Want to Try Something Else?
If snow running is not your thing, the Techo Dark Run is being held the night before the Beret Montgarri race on the resort’s idyllic ski slopes. What makes this event different is that the course is marked out with LED lights and accompanied by music, creating a not-to-be-missed experience.
Another unique event being held in Baqueira Beret this year is the inaugural Snowbike Race, for those with a love for mountain biking. The rules are pretty open too, so if you want to take the course on your e-bike or fatbike, you’re very much welcome to.
Date & Times Confirmed
If you’re wanting to take part in either the snow running event or the fatbike races, the date has been confirmed as Sunday the 19th of January, with the Techno Dark Run occurring the night before from 7 pm. Competitors can pick up their bib number at the sports centre in Salardú, which is an urban center situation 10km from the ski slopes.
All participants in the Montgarri snow running race will receive a race pack that includes product samples and other freebies, with the meeting scheduled to begin at 8.30 am. However, race time could be adjusted slightly at the last minute due to weather conditions, so keep a keen out for updates!
You’ll find both the start and finish lines for all snow-running courses in the car parking area of the Beret area. There’s ample parking available too, with space for more than 700 vehicles and a large village area complete with cafeteria and refreshment services for everyone involved in the Beret Montgarri race.
Recommended Racing Attire
There are no rules regarding clothing to be worn during proceedings, however, we strongly advise that you follow the recommendations below:
- Wearing multiple layers is a good idea, with the exact amount being determined by the individual and the prevailing conditions
- A minimum of 3 layers of clothing for the top half and fewer for the legs
- Ensure all bare skin is covered
- Standard running shoes are fine, however, carrying spikes or crampons is a mandatory requirement. Don’t worry if you don’t have any, as it’s possible to purchase them with your race pack
A Solidarity Event
There is a charitable side to this year’s events, with the Solidarity Snow Running event collaborating with the Initiative Solaridaries Angel Olaran Foundation (www.isolidaries.org). Their efforts are aimed at helping to feed the needy of Ethiopia and each of the Beret Montagrri snow-running races are being held in conjunction with the foundation.
